CNN —A Texas judge ruled Thursday that the state’s CROWN Act does not make it unlawful for school dress codes to limit a student’s hair length. The decision is a blow to Darryl George, a Houston-area high school student who sued his school district after he was suspended for months over the length of his locs hairstyle. The trial marks the conclusion to a monthslong legal battle between George and the Barbers Hill Independent School District. A Texas judge ruled on Thursday that a school district’s dress code, which it used to suspend a Black student last year for refusing to change the way he wears his hair, did not violate a state law meant to prohibit race-based discrimination against people based on their hairstyle. The student, Darryl George, 18, has locs, or long ropelike strands of hair, that he pins on his head in a barrel roll, a protective style that his mother said reflected Black culture. He was separated from his classmates, given disciplinary notices, placed in in-school suspension and sent to an off-campus program. The hearing on Thursday, in the 253rd Judicial District Court in Anahuac, was in response to a lawsuit filed in September by the Barbers Hill Independent School District. The act, which took effect on Sept. 1, says a school district policy “may not discriminate against a hair texture or protective hairstyle commonly or historically associated with race.” It does not specifically mention hair length.

Notably, research also has shown that rates of aggressive subtypes of the disease surged in the recent past among U.S. women, with Black women particularly affected. Darryl George was suspended from his Texas high school over the length of his locs hairstyle. He was given another round of suspension, a civil rights activist helping his family, Dr. Candice Matthews, told Insider. Florida's Miami Beach adopted an ordinance Wednesday banning race-based hair discrimination in housing, employment and access to public services and facilities. The Miami Beach City Commission voted unanimously to prohibit discriminatory practices "based on the texture or style of a person's hair," the city said in a news release Wednesday. “It’s unacceptable in 2022 that Black Americans and other minorities still face discrimination based on something so trivial as whether or not they have textured or curly hair,” Miami Beach Vice Mayor Alex Fernandez said in a statement. “This serves to protect cultural identity and not have to worry about sacrificing who you are in Miami Beach.”The city's human rights ordinance had already prohibited discrimination based on a number of characteristics, including weight and height. Miami Beach City did not immediately respond to an overnight request for comment.

Women using chemical hair-straightening products are at a higher risk of uterine cancer than women who reported not using them, a new study by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) found. Researchers noted that Black women may have a higher risk because they are more likely to use those products more frequently. “Sixty percent of the participants who reported using straighteners were Black women. The bottom line is that the exposure burden appears to be higher among Black women,” Chandra Jackson, an NIEHS Earl Stadtman Investigator who co-authored the study, said. Advocates like Greene, one of the leading voices in the movement against Black hair discrimination, have highlighted that wearing natural hair isn’t easy or always safe for Black people.
